Distribution

  • In India it is distributed in evergreen forests of western ghats, Maharashtra, Goa, Karnataka, Kerala

  • It occurs in the Primary and secondary forests, near wet places, like streams, rivers, swamps

Ecology

  • Yellow footed green pigeon, bulbuls, Barbets, bats feed on fruits
  • Flies, moths pollinate flowers
  • Host plant of Endoclita malabaricus moth

Uses

  • Fruits are edible
  • Tree possesses antimicrobial, antioxidant, hepatoprotective and

          antidiabetic property

  • The bark is used as a medicine against intestinal worm and malaria
  • A decoction of the bark is used as a treatment for cough, fever, asthma, and jaundice
  • An infusion of the leaves is used as a treatment against colic, jaundice, and in postpartum treatment
  • Leaf powder and warm leaf poultice are applied to white spots in the skin
  • The twigs are used in basketry
  • A fatty oil is obtained from the seeds
